Halloween

It is thought that the roots of Halloween come from 3000 years ago from the Celtic festival Samhain where all the people gathered around the fire and druidas (shamans of the Celts) were responsible for driving away the spirits. It was believed that this night the barrier between the world of the living and the dead was very weak and the spirits came with powers. In Celtic tales all kinds of atrocities are attributed to the evil spirits.

With the conquest of the Celts by the Romans some pagan festivals infiltrated. In the eighth century the Church named November 1st as All Saints that did not have its own day of celebration. So the night before was called “All Hallow’s Eve” which then gave way to Halloween.

Trick or treat became popular around 1930. The early Christians used to go from village to village asking evangelizing and eating at home. As in 1920-1930 real crimes were made on the night of Halloween, the US government tried to shift the focus of the party on something more gentle and familiar as carving pumpkins, dressing up and, like the early Christians, go for house to house asking for candies.

And you, how do you celebrate Halloween?

The legend of “The face of Muslim ”

Alicante is a city of history but also legends that are still living among the people ! The Mount Benacantil has the most interesting of them all.

According to this legend, the Caliph of Alicante wanted to marry his beautiful daughter Cántara with one of the two young Muslims who were madly in love with her. To choose one of them the Caliph decided that each one should do a particular task, and Allah would decide . between them. Almanzor, had to go to India to bring his beloved rare spices . The other, Ali, had to dig a ditch to bring his beloved green water Tibi to Alicante. It is said that Almanzor put much effort into his work, while Ali decided to write poems and preach Cántara her beauty, so she fell in love with Ali. When Almanzor returned from his adventure, Caliph gave him the hand of his daughter. Ali, desperate, committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. Cántara chose the same action . The Caliph died of sadness and , surprisingly , his effigy appeared on Mount Benacantil recorded . The court, impressed, decided to call the city ” Alicántara “, hence the current name of Alicante.

History of Santa Barbara´s Castle

After the beaches of Alicante, the place everybody like the most is the famous Castle of Santa Barbara. It’s not just an awesome place with views that take your breath away, but also the witness of hundreds of years of history . The Benacantil Mount where the castle is located is a strategic position of great value because it dominates the plain of Alicante. That is why, perhaps, he was elected by all cultures that passed through these lands for settlement (prehistoric , Iberian , Roman and Islamic ) .

Kings Charles I and Philip II of Spain fortified the castle before the enemy attacks and later was used as a dungeon for prisoners of the crown.

Currently , in the Castle is developing a municipal project , ” Castle Museums “, whose ultimate goal is to turn it into a major cultural center of the city. There are many permanent exhibits as well as temporary and very interesting to the public.

Benacantil Mount has what is called “The face of Muslim ” that is related to a popular legend . Do you know which one?

Alicante will have a zoo

The current finca del Roal estate will soon be turned into a zoo with a hundred different species. Big cats like tigers , pumas and lions , reptiles , exotic birds, monkeys and other animals will make this zoo one of tourist attractions. It´s expected to open its doors before the end of the year.

The zoo is next to the road between San Juan and Villafranqueza in what today is an animal shelter where the animals come from all over Spain . Exotic animals are usually abandoned and endangered . This will be a different note about this zoo because here you will know the particular story of each animal and the vicissitudes that happened to them before they get there . The defense of nature and its protection will be the key values promoted in this zoo.

Many visitors and school groups have already reserved their visits for the inauguration of this unique zoo.
