Tabarca Isle, the jewel of Alicante

Alicante has a hidden jewel at a distance of about 12 km by sea. The Tabarca Isle is only 1,800 meters long and 400 meters wide, yet it is the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community.

In the past it served as a refuge for pirates of the Mediterranean coasts. Later there stayed about 69 families of fishermen, prisoners of the King of Algiers and militars for the protection of the Spanish coast as well.

According to the 2013 recount on the island there are only 59 regular inhabitants, but it is a very famous touristic destination. Trips, picnics, water sports are organized there. Its crystal clear waters and abundant marine species are ideal for diving enthusiasts. Gastronomy is also a strong point of the island. Paella is their pride and no visitor should miss it.

You can get there on a boat ride enjoying the weather and the sea (http://cruceroskontiki.com/)

Ven a disfrutar!

Explanada de España

One of the most emblematic places in Alicante is the walkway of the Esplanade of Spain and few know its history and evolution. The idea of creating a landscaped walkway emerged thanks to Civil Governor of the Province of Perfecto Manuel de Olalde who wanted to give it for the population to enjoy some green place. Therefore, when the works began in 1867 “Olalde´s Walkway” was chosen as the name however after the Revolution in September of 1868 the name was changed to “Paseo de los Martires”.

In 1941 after the Spanish Civil War, it was decided to rename the walkway to “Esplanade of Spain” and till nowadays. Since it was conceived until the last reformation of this symbol of Alicante, it has served as a place of rest and enjoy in the city. It goes from the Park of Canalejas following the line of the harbour to the beach Postiguet. It´s surrounded on both sides by majestic palm trees that give the much desired shade in summer. It is one of the favorite places of both Alicante citizens and visitors of the city with numerous restaurants, cafes, a stage for outdoor concerts and exhibitions of painters and artists.

Come and enjoy!

The legend of “The face of Muslim ”

Alicante is a city of history but also legends that are still living among the people ! The Mount Benacantil has the most interesting of them all.

According to this legend, the Caliph of Alicante wanted to marry his beautiful daughter Cántara with one of the two young Muslims who were madly in love with her. To choose one of them the Caliph decided that each one should do a particular task, and Allah would decide . between them. Almanzor, had to go to India to bring his beloved rare spices . The other, Ali, had to dig a ditch to bring his beloved green water Tibi to Alicante. It is said that Almanzor put much effort into his work, while Ali decided to write poems and preach Cántara her beauty, so she fell in love with Ali. When Almanzor returned from his adventure, Caliph gave him the hand of his daughter. Ali, desperate, committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. Cántara chose the same action . The Caliph died of sadness and , surprisingly , his effigy appeared on Mount Benacantil recorded . The court, impressed, decided to call the city ” Alicántara “, hence the current name of Alicante.

History of Santa Barbara´s Castle

After the beaches of Alicante, the place everybody like the most is the famous Castle of Santa Barbara. It’s not just an awesome place with views that take your breath away, but also the witness of hundreds of years of history . The Benacantil Mount where the castle is located is a strategic position of great value because it dominates the plain of Alicante. That is why, perhaps, he was elected by all cultures that passed through these lands for settlement (prehistoric , Iberian , Roman and Islamic ) .

Kings Charles I and Philip II of Spain fortified the castle before the enemy attacks and later was used as a dungeon for prisoners of the crown.

Currently , in the Castle is developing a municipal project , ” Castle Museums “, whose ultimate goal is to turn it into a major cultural center of the city. There are many permanent exhibits as well as temporary and very interesting to the public.

Benacantil Mount has what is called “The face of Muslim ” that is related to a popular legend . Do you know which one?
